School profile

Hartland is a school where you want to be; as a pupil, a teacher, and as a parent; a place of learning and discovery, a place of creative thinkers and problem solvers, a place of laughter and friendship, a place where each child gets the individual attention that they deserve.

Learning principles

The school's teachers harness each child’s curiosity, using real life examples to ensure that their lessons are both understood and remembered. Children are often taught outside of their classrooms with Foundation students searching for letters on the school’s signage whilst Year 3 discover the ways of the Aztecs through hands-on investigations around the school and Year 6 learn how to create an exciting new chocolate bar. The school encourages them to think and to question, equipping them with the skills that they will need to enjoy a successful future. Of course, HIS also ensures that they have a solid foundation of traditional skills; spelling, grammar and times tables are very much part of the school life.

Student Support

Support for special learning needs

Yes

The Learning Support Department works closely with our teaching staff to identify any needs at an early stage, and provides the support that will enable each child to thrive and flourish within the curriculum. Children may develop needs that require learning support at any time and stage in school. They may be cognitive, physical or emotional. Teachers trained in Special Educational Needs will work with children within the school. Where appropriate, parents may be referred to external agencies for further support.

Support for gifted and talented students

Yes

Across the world, those schools that have ignited and inspired their more able pupils to achieve excellence, have found the whole school benefiting from the excitement that such a programme generates. There are no limits for the more able child at Hartland. The Hartland Way is to enable the most gifted students to gain entry to the world’s top universities by offering a world – leading programme designed specifically to challenge the more able. The school is delighted that Dr. Martin Stephen has agreed to become Project Leader for Hartland’s programme. Dr. Stephen is a former High Master of St Paul’s School, London and The Manchester Grammar School, and co-author with Ian Warwick of the acclaimed Educating The More Able Student: What Works And Why (SAGE Publishing, 2015).
