School profile

Al Bateen Academy opened in September 2011 to provide students with high quality education from the ages of 11 to 18. The school follows the English National curriculum with an international dimension, adapted to meet the needs of students living in Abu Dhabi. The school's mission is to provide a world-class, holistic, international education for students whilst at the same time ensuring the highest standards of academic achievement.

Learning principles

The school aims to: - offer a curriculum that provides knowledge, challenge and progression delivered through high quality teaching, learning and assessment - provide opportunities for students to develop individual abilities and talents through creativity, sport, teamwork, leadership, performance and service - promote intercultural understanding and support mother-tongue language development through the curriculum, enrichment and CAS activities - ensure students are equipped with the skills and attributes they need to succeed as lifelong learners in a 21st century world - information technology, creative thinking, critical analysis, problem solving and decision making - provide caring and supportive environment in which students respect each other, feel safe and happy, and in which they thrive

Student Support

Support for special learning needs

Yes

All students are fully included in the community. Most of the support happens in-class, but specialist one-to-one or small group support will be provided if deemed more appropriate.

Support for gifted and talented students

Yes

Al Bateen ensures that all students are challenged and make good progress. An identification process is in place for Gifted and Talented students. Provision is then made through differentiation in mainstream lessons, homework and participation in CAS activities. These all offer a wide range of enrichment, extension and acceleration experiences. Gifted and Talented students have a range of needs, some of which are curriculum orientated and some of which are ‘personal and social’. It is important to keep these distinct needs in mind when devising appropriate provision for students whilst ensuring their full human development. The school provides opportunities for students to take part in external competitions and programmes aimed at high achievers, including the Model United Nations Conference, where participants assume the role of a UN Ambassador and discuss world issues.

Admission process

Yes, students applying for a place, will be required to complete Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs), which assess a range of reasoning skills.

Admission and language criteria

The tests look at verbal (words), quantitative (numbers), non-verbal reasoning (shapes and figures) and spatial awareness. The test results, which are for school use only, help to identify the strengths and potential of each student, preferred styles of learning and how the school can further support your son/daughter with their studies in each subject. Al Bateen School is inclusive but needs to be sure that a student can access the curriculum, enjoy their learning, make sufficient academic progress and have the support required to be a successful learner. If a student achieves low CAT scores, the school may invite the student to complete additional entrance testing in English and Mathematics.
